DEMONSTRATOR – MELINDA MORRISON
(Patricia Harder, VP-Education)
As a
young woman, Melinda’s B.A. in Fine Arts from the University of Texas at
Tyler took a backseat to the corporate world for many years: advertising
exec; graphic designer and art director of her own company; and later
corporate and executive recruiter. Not surprisingly, she was recognized in
national competitions for her print design and annual reports, but shortly
after her move to Denver in 1994, she “felt like her soul was drying up”. An oil-painting class at the Art
Students’ League of Denver (ASLD) rained water on that desert ground.
Over the next five years, Melinda studied
painting extensively at the ASLD under the guidance of master painters like
Quang Ho, Kim English, Ron Hicks and Kevin Weckbach. As her passion and skill grew, so did her
dream to paint full-time. She made
the leap in 2003 and brought years of corporate skills into the new and
intricate dance of a full-time professional art career. Melinda hasn’t looked back. Since that decision, she
has participated in numerous one woman shows, national and regional shows,
and plein air events in the Southwest and Southeast gaining recognition for
her paintings.
After 21 years
in Colorado, Melinda found herself moving her home and studio to be closer
to her family in Texas. She now resides
in the historic neighborhood of Ryan Place in Fort Worth, TX where she
paints and teaches out of her studio.
Melinda has been featured in numerous publications such as The
Santa Fean Magazine, American Art Collector, The Albuquerque Journal and
SouthWest Art. She is a gifted
teacher of workshops and is collected among collectors all across the US.
Melinda is
represented by Alexandra Stevens Fine Art, Santa Fe, NM; Arts of Denver,
Denver, CO; R.S. Hanna Gallery, Fredericksburg, TX and Texas Treasures,
Boerne, TX.

SPOTLIGHT ARTIST–BERTHA LOMBARD
by
AzaleeTatum
Bertha
was born and grew up in a small town in Virginia with two younger
brothers. After completing high school,
she migrated to the Space Coast of Florida where she received her Bachelor of
Science degree from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida and completed some
work on her Masters of Science at Crummer School. Bertha began her career in
the technical field without any thought to the arts. She worked on the
Saturn-Apollo Project at Kennedy Space Center and the Space Shuttle at Michoud
in Louisiana. After the "space
race", Bertha was involved with independent software consulting as well as
various software houses.
Bertha has no formal training as an
artist. She was home schooled by a
grove of 13 ancient, weathered cottonwood trees growing near the river where
she lived. The large trunks and limbs were her shelter from the wind. She named
each tree and her favorite was Desporado.
It was a sad day when that wind damaged tree had to be chopped
down. She enjoyed each season but winter
was the most memorable. The trees
revealed their dark, twisted and mighty limb structure against the snowy
sky. While looking for ways to
replicate this impressive scene, she thought of using copper wire. As Bertha began copper wire sculpturing, she
questioned whether the population of the variety of trees were enough to
continue to inspire her. She soon
realized trees are like people and that no two are alike. Copper wire sculpture is her favorite
medium.
She is encouraged to be a WAA member. She found that most WAA artists are painters
but quickly learned the concepts of painting, as well as sculpture, have a
third dimension. Bertha believes the
most important thing has been having a group that is interesting, friendly and
supportive. She also enjoys the meetings
and shows and has received two WAA Honorable Mentions. They were her first entries in an art show
and her very first art awards. As a WAA member she qualifies to displays
designs in the Gallery.
Berton, her husband, and Bertha, winter in
Arizona where she is a member of Yuma
Potpourri Artists. The Yuma program promotes handmaking and preservation of
arts and crafts. Bertha participates in two large Yuma fairs each year.
Her goal is to continue observing unusual
trees and turning them into sculpture.
She desires to design larger trees and at some point try fire
coloration. She continually works on a copper wire
sculpture or planning her next adventure.
She considers driving along a tree lined road lined an adventure and each
tree readily poses for her. She is looking
for a comical tree to add humor to her sculptures and is excited about the
possibilities surrounding her. Her
advice is that if you love art and want to create, don't worry about art
lessons. Just do it!
Bertha enjoys traveling,
furniture refinishing, growing things in planters and reading from a stack of
inherited Bibles. WAA members welcome
Bertha and her unique talent.. Each member offers friendship as well sharing
new concepts to help you fulfill your goals.
