Betty Murray Award

Congratulations to Vonnie Kohn and Paul Latham for receiving the Betty Murray Award.  Both very well deserved!

First Place – Dale Martin – War Ponies

Second Place – Jo Cheatham – Ready for a Swim

Third Place – John Weimer – Last Snow

October Demonstration

Toni Blake gave a great demo on silk painting.  She pins the silk on stretcher before starting. The paints are all silk dyes and become part of the fabric when dry.  She uses watercolor brushes.   Place the paint on the silk carefully and let it “move.” Too much brushing ruins the beautiful effect.  Toni uses resist to create barriers or to outline for each color.  When finished, place between 2 layers of newsprint on each side. Roll to dry. She orders her supplies from Dharma Mfg. on the internet.  They are very reasonably priced, and quick to ship.  Toni very generously gave two of her original pieces for our raffle!  Thanks for a great demo!

Member Spotlight - By Patricia Harder

Carroll Richardson

Carroll Richardson, born & raised in Fort Worth, comes from a long line of Texans.  Although his two sisters and brother are deceased and Carroll is single with no children, he has a number of relatives in the area.  For 25 years Carroll worked in a machine shop, progressing to furniture and woodworking where he became a furniture sample maker for a company supplying hotels and motels. Moving from the shop to the office, Carroll made furniture-design drawings on the computer.  His last position was as a computer designer of store fixtures, shelving and display pieces.  Now retired, Carroll divides his time with exercise (3 times a week at the YMCA), biking, walking, camping, reading (mysteries), and art.  As a child, Carroll was encouraged to draw by his mother, especially when the weather kept him inside.  That interest didn’t progress until he went to a SWA meeting, and there he found a artist in his  neighborhood (Dan Brown) who gave him lessons for several years.  That led to workshops with Doug Prine (Texas), Thomas Owen (Colorado), and Gerald Brommer  (California).  Brommer’s emphasis was how to put emotion into paintings to make a connection with the viewer.  Presently he’s taking lessons from Martha Spurlock who is helping him produce more colorful paintings which he’s enjoying. Besides being a member of Weatherford Art Association, Carroll also belongs to the Fort Worth chapter of the Society of Watercolor Artists (SWA) and has been a member in both for 8 years.  Carroll’s favorite medium is watercolor although he  enjoys pencil & oils.  His favorite subject is landscape, especially drawing & painting plein air.

Awards include 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place in WAA’s Artist of the Month competition and two Honorable Mentions at the Possum Kingdom show, Art De Los Brazos.  Currently his work can be seen at Kelly Telgenhoff’s Stone Creek Fine Art Gallery.

A Message From the President

I want to take this opportunity to thank every participating member of the Weatherford Art Association for their continued support and to let each and every one of you know how important it is to hang in there through these times that may include a possible relocation of the Weatherford Art Association and Firehouse Art Gallery.

I want everyone to know that your membership dues and studio fees are very important to the Association in the effort to facilitate any possible future relocation and important to you if you want to remain a member in good standing in order to participate in the “Artist of the Month” and any shows that are not “open” shows.

The WAA is very fortunate to have a gallery where members can display their work to the public and sell their art. The studio portion is also a place where artists can hold classes and promote the growth of art appreciation among our members and the general public. It’s a place that allows us to hold our general meetings and have art demonstrations every month throughout the year. Many art associations that I have been connected to in the past are not near that fortunate. They have no gallery or studio space in which to hold meetings and classes or sell their members art.

Your Board of Directors has been very busy soliciting donations from Patrons of the Arts and other civic minded individuals but we cannot depend solely on outside donations. The Weatherford Art Association needs every single member to donate time to help keep the gallery open, any art that could be sold to benefit the Association or any monetary amount you can donate to help the growth and promotion of the WAA. In the words of a very famous man, it is time to -

“Ask not what your Association can do for you… Ask what you can do for your Association”

 Thank you, Dale Martin
President, Weatherford Art Association

Congratulations!
Julie Lawther has won the Best of Show in the Navasso Council of the Arts National Juried Art Show for “Peyton & Ollie, A Love Story.”

Silent Auction to be Held

We are planning a Silent Auction to be held January 28 and 29, 2012. It is a fund raiser for WAA which is very much needed. All art should be submitted the week of January 1 thru 7, 2012.  We will need about 20-30 pieces of art priced approximately $300 and about 12 more at a higher price. These pieces will be 100% donated to WAA for auction WAA. Originals and prints will be accepted.  We’re hoping for a large turnout for this event.  Please see what you can donate.  We will send a reminder email to all about every 2 weeks, as this is very important to all members.  Thank you for your support.

HAVE A GREAT THANKSGIVING!
