February Demonstration
Kathy Cunning gave our February demonstration on “mono prints.”  She uses 80 lb drawing paper or watercolor paper, which is soaked in water while preparing the plexiglass.  Kathy uses sharpies or Speedball inks, which are very much like paints.  She lightly sands the plexiglass so as to receive the sharpie and to prevent beading.  Choose a painting you wish to work with, place it under the plexiglass, and use sharpie or the inks to paint the image on the glass.  When ready to print, place paper on a towel and remove excess water.  Place the print over the painted image on the glass, and roll or press firmly. A “brayer” or rubber roller works well.  Remove paper and voila! You have a print of your image.  Nicely done Kathy!

Connie Fox will be our March demonstrator. She will be painting on gourds.

Member Spotlight By Patricia Harder
Vonnie Kohn, a nationally recognized award-winning artist, is a  native Texan specializing in oil painting and sculpture.  As the daughter of a Creek Path Cherokee saddle maker in the historical area of Fort Worth, her background provided the interest in western genre for many of her paintings.  Extensive travel has brought diversity to her subject matter which also includes Native American, wildlife, still life, and portraiture.  Reflected in her creative process is the theme of “the enduring spirit,” the delicate balance in the relationship between man and his environment.
Vonnie and her husband, a Goodyear store manager, have three children who are “nearly as old as I am,”  and  seven grandchildren. Vonnie’s brother, Jerry Walden, a retired Master electrician and cartoonist, is commander of S.W.T. Lanham Confederate Camp, a living history group in Weatherford.
Vonnie attended Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth in her 30’s and was already an established artist when she graduated at 43.  In addition to her art degree, Vonnie studied oils with Margie Walker  and watercolor with Ronald Thomasson.  After working five years at Paul Bryant Bronze Foundry as a wax chaser and taking print making for three years in college, Vonnie is a sculptor and a print maker, but primarily a contemporary realistic artist.  From 1995 to 2000, Vonnie hit the road doing national shows and selling lots of paintings.  In 2006 Vonnie  joined WAA and was vice president in charge of all  shows, raising the bar from one to as many as six  shows a year.
In addition to her work being in SWA Art Magazine Collector’s Edition, Vonnie has won many first- place ribbons in national shows.  Vonnie was commissioned to do the painting of Texas governor S.W.T.  Lanham, a Weatherford native,  hangs at the Doss Heritage Museum.  This article mentions only a smattering of Vonnie’s  many accomplishments and awards.  If everything had been listed, this could have turned into a book.
Vonnie has participated as a juror, workshop instructor, and advisory committee member for many art organizations.  She is affiliated with national organizations, including the Oil Painters of America, American Women Artists, National Watercolor Society, and the Association of Miniature Artists.  She is also listed with the Artists of Texas and Daily Painters International Artists, two online groups.  As an educator, she was responsible for the development of “Talking Leaves,” an Indian Heritage art program taught in the Ft. Worth Schools during the 1990’s.
Currently, Vonnie teaches at the Firehouse Art Gallery on Mondays (adults) 1-3 P.M. and Saturdays (youth) 10-12.  She also teaches in her Walden-Kohn Studio in Springtown.  Her WAA booth sign quoting Michelangelo says “…and still I am learning.”  Vonnie, too, never stops learning and giving back.

Critique Returns

The ever popular critique portion of our meetings will return in February. Scheduled for this month is Colleen Erickson. Critique schedule for coming months: March-Virginia Mayfield; April-Diane Brown; May Kelly Ingleright-Telgenhoff; June-Vonnie Kohn; July- Judy Mason.

 Welcome New Members

Michael Grace, John Redmond, David Gates, Cindy Gates, Judi Stout, Sue Acree and Christie Gordon.

Clay Workshop

Paul Latham will hold a clay workshop beginning Saturday, March 10 from 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday March 11 from 11 am to 4 pm.  Cost is $110.00. This includes $20.00 worth of materials and tools that the student may take home.  Saturday’s workshop will focus on slab building and hump- press molds.  Sunday will focus on coil building.  This covers techniques that people can do at home with minimal investment.  Sign up at the Gallery.  If you have questions, call WAA at 817-599-3278.

January Demonstration

Michael Grace demonstrated his technique for creating beautiful bowls out of copper.  He also has done work with silver, bronze and brass.  Michael has been working with metals for about 3 years.  He makes his own tools for hammering, as they can be quite expensive.  He starts with a flat sheet of copper; next he carefully hammers to shape a bowl.  He uses a special tool to create shapes and curves. All tapping and hammering must be done with care as you shape the bowl. When finished, he burns the piece with a plumber’s torch, then dips the bowl in water to cool.  Lastly, the piece is dipped in sodium bisolfate or “pickling” liquid to harden. The result is a beautiful piece of art! Thank you Michael!

February Demonstrator

Kathy Cunning will be our February demonstrator.  She will be working with “mono prints.”

Member Spotlight – Jay Summers

By Patricia Harder

Jay was born in West Virginia to a family of 15.  Jay’s dad was a farmer and carpenter, and with 13 children in the family, we know what his mother did.  Nine of the siblings are still living, and the oldest is 90.

At the age of 18, Jay joined the Air Force and made it his career for 21 years.  After retirement, he worked for General Dynamics - Lockheed in quality control for 24 Years.  Jay and his wife Joyce were married 50 years, had four children and seven grandchildren, most of whom reside in the area. Joyce & Jay loved traveling around the United States until her death in  2009.

Besides traveling, Jay loves to spend time with his family, work with the Gideons (an international group dedicated to distributing Bibles), attend Agape Baptist Church, and sing in the choir. There, he met & married Janice in 2010.  Jay took all 14 family members to Orlando’s Disneyworld for Christmas in 2010, and spent last summer cruising the Western Caribbean. In April Jay and Janice are headed to Hawaii.

After Jay’s second retirement, he fulfilled his long-time desire to paint by attending a painting class for seniors at Tarrant County College’s NW Campus.  Later he took lessons from Doug Prine for seven years.  His medium is oil, and his subject matter is Western, mainly landscapes and animals.  Jay wants to become a better artist (don’t we all), and see his work in a gallery.  Presently he belongs to the Lockheed Art Activity group where he won a first place ribbon for the first painting he showed.  He has won several ribbons and presently has three paintings in WAA’s Western Show.  Stop by and see his wonderful paintings.

Congratulations!

Kerry Nelson won the Member’s Choice Award  in the EBSQ Art Winter Art Exhibit for her painting of “Winter Spirits.”

Colleen Erickson
Born in Fort Worth with one sister, 3 brothers and an artistic mother, Colleen has been married (47 yrs.) to Eric, a career Air Force man, and has 2 sons & 5 grandchildren ranging from 6 to 17  years old.

Colleen is a TCU cum laude graduate with an education major and secondary certification in art & computer.  For 3 yrs. Colleen taught in the Eagle Mountain/Saginaw ISD and worked for Lockheed, retiring as a systems engineer in 2005.

After a 20 yr. break, Colleen started painting again in 2000 when a friend invited her to the Society of Watercolor Association.  She became their photographer, did their catalogs worked on their website, organized & hung their shows, and was president in 2004-2005.  Colleen is a signature member of SWA and one of only four artists who has earned (2011) a lifetime honorary membership for her many contributions.

A member of the Weatherford Art Association for 11 yrs., Colleen was vice president of workshops & classes, teaches a Thursday class, & was instrumental in compiling the WAA cookbook to raise  funds to move into the Firehouse Art Center.  Besides being a WAA Artist of the Month in 2011, Colleen won first place in Life Portrait in the Trinity Art Guild in Euless, and won the Purchase Award in the 2011 Kansas National Watercolor Show.

In addition to painting and studying on her own, Colleen has done two workshops with Lauren McCracken, studied 2 yrs. with Soon Warren, a national artist & author, and taken numerous other workshops.  Although watercolor is Colleen’s specialty, she also works in other mediums – the combination of acrylic & pastel is a present interest.  She is a realistic painter & paints from her own photos.  Colleen claims that signing her paintings is the hardest part.  Go figure!  Her goal in 2012 is to enter more national shows.

Colleen’s creativity is also expressed in woodworking, quilting & marbleizing.  She & Eric added on to their Lake Weatherford cabin with Colleen building cabinets, furniture & even laying tile.

In September, Colleen entered her handmade quilt in the Parker County Quilt Show & won honorable mention.  Marbleizing paper and fabrics is a fun project she enjoys with her granddaughter. So, if you need someone to help you build a house, create your furniture, make quilts for your beds & paint pictures for your walls ------ Colleen is your woman!
